EXSC 9150 Summer 2022

Abstract

Childhood obesity is a serious health problem affecting many children, and its prevalence continues to rise. Educating parents and children on the rising rates of childhood obesity, its causes, and preventable measures is essential to decrease the incidence of childhood obesity. The mission of this project was to educate parents and children about the rising rates of childhood obesity, its causes, and preventable measures they can take. Sugar-sweetened beverages have been associated with an increased risk for childhood obesity, and children today are drinking well over the recommended number of sugary drinks a day. Education on reducing sugar-sweetened beverages and physical activity have been associated with a decreased risk for childhood obesity (Kamin et al., 2022). The education provided by this project will help children decrease their risk of childhood obesity and the associated risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and adult obesity.

EXSC 9250 Spring 2023

Abstract

Childhood obesity has reached epidemic levels in the United States. Currently, about 17% of US children are presenting with obesity (Sanyaolu et al., 2019). Due to the increase in the prevalence of obesity among children, a variety of research studies have been conducted to discover what associations and risk factors increase the probability that a child will present with obesity. Many research studies suggest that there is a higher association between low socioeconomic status and development of childhood obesity prevalence rates compared to those children in higher socioeconomic status (CDC, 2023). The mission of this project was to educate the parents, caregivers, and children of Coatesville, Pennsylvania YMCA regarding the rising rates of childhood obesity, its causes, and preventable measures that can be taken including reducing the consumption of sugary-sweetened beverages. Coatesville has a high rate of diversity and low-income families. The education provided by this project will help the children and families of Coatesville, PA decrease their risk of developing childhood obesity and its associated chronic diseases.

EXSC 9500 Summer 2023

Abstract

Childhood obesity continues to be on the rise affecting millions of children worldwide. Children spend the majority of their days at school, making schools a priority setting for obesity prevention efforts. Schools are a critical part of the social environment that shapes children's eating and physical activity patterns. Many studies have found educational interventions in schools beneficial in reducing the risks of childhood obesity (Liu et al., 2019; Sbruzzi et al., 2013). Hence this project was conducted at Collegium Charter School, where 36% of the students are economically disadvantaged (U.S. News, 2023). The education provided by this project will help the children of Collegium Charter School decrease their risk of developing childhood obesity. The mission of the project was to educate school-aged children about healthy habits such as eating healthy, getting plenty of sleep, and the importance of physical activity in an effort to decrease the risks of childhood obesity.
