Teaching Artifact #1

EXSC 9150 Fall 2022

Abstract

Parents primarily dictate the type of food in the household and serve as the role models determining the norms that shape children's eating habits. Therefore, teaching children and their parents is essential to decrease the incidence of childhood obesity. Social media is an easy and more convenient way to access information, and social media promotes self-directed learning and is commonly used amongst all ages. Social media, such as Instagram, is a platform that can reach a diverse audience. Many studies suggest that social media can be a helpful tool to promote improving children's dietary intake and nutrition knowledge for both parents and their children (Zarnowiecki et al., 2020; Pilar et al., 2021; Thomas et al., 2020). The literature suggests that social media can be a beneficial intervention in combating childhood obesity. For this project, I used Instagram to promote easy healthy recipes for children and their parents in an effort to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity.

Teaching Artifact #2

EXSC 9250 Spring 2023

Abstract

Children don’t have much control over many things in their lives. Parents provide and select the types of food for the household. Therefore, educating parents is just as important as educating children on practicing healthy eating habits and lifestyle choices. Ensuring parents understand the causes, risk factors, and preventable measures of childhood obesity is essential for decreasing their child’s risk. In recent years, there’s no denying that ever since social networks and social media made way into our lives, everything is different. Social media has quickly become a channel of communication in this fast-paced world. Parents are usually busy with work and don’t always have time to prioritize learning. Social media plays a big part in the lives of parents and children today; therefore, utilizing this platform as a source to provide education is beneficial for promoting nutrition knowledge. Several studies suggest that utilizing podcasts as a form of educational technology can be a beneficial platform to promote learning (Back et al., 2017; Lien et al., 2018). Learners can listen to podcasts anywhere, and are easy to fit into a busy schedule. For this project, the social media theme continued with an original podcast for children and their parents to learn about the causes, risk factors, and preventable measures of childhood obesity.

Teaching Artifact #3

EXSC 9500 Summer 2023

Abstract

The childhood obesity epidemic continues to grow, making understanding the causes and risk factors of childhood obesity an important factor in decreasing the risks of childhood obesity. Ensuring parents understand these causes and risk factors is important to help decrease their child’s risk. Parents and caregivers have a busy schedule which can be a challenge when it comes to providing education to this audience. Thanks to social media communicating with the target audience of parents can be achieved more easily. Social media is one of the most common forms of communication today. Blogs, for example, are typically on websites where entries, called posts, are written by health professionals. Blogs have many interactable features, such as the ability to comment, like, share and provide social support. Studies have found that blogs are a beneficial intervention delivery amongst parents (Caplette et al., 2017; Dumas et al., 2020). Social media, such as blogs, represent a unique opportunity for improving nutrition knowledge because they facilitate interactive communication between the public and health professionals. Therefore, for this project, I created a blog where adults and children, as well as other health professionals, can access information regarding childhood obesity, causes, and prevention.
